Australian News...

I once read in a book given to me by Colin that the topic of coffee made it into the New York Times more than a mention of Australia. To prove that point, here are three stories I see almost every day on Australian news that were not searchable (and thus I'm guessing not mentioned) on major American online news sites!

1. Controversy with Rugby League players Todd Carney and Anthony Watts -- This past weekend, Watts apparently assaulted his girlfriend while drunk and Carney "broke club rules" by drinking (he had previously been arrested for drink (drunk) driving)
      - Times mentioned in cnn.com sports section - zero
      - Times mentioned in espn.com -- zero

I can see how this wouldn't be popular or interesting to American readers, though, since they wouldn't know anything about who these players are. However, you can read all about the NFL lockout stuff on the Aussie version of Fox Sports.

2. Australian Defense Force Academy sex scandal ("Skype Affair")-- 18 year-old female cadet was filmed having sex and watched by six other cadets via Skype without her knowledge. Because she felt that the ADFA authorities were not offering support she went public. This whole thing has spurred a big debate about females in the military.
       - Times mentioned in cnn.com - zero
       - Times mentioned in nytimes.com -- zero

3. Keli Lane - former Australian water polo player who killed her baby in '96 was finally sentenced to 18 years prision.
       - Times mentioned in cnn.com or nytimes.com - zero!

It seems crazy that all of this stuff has been going on here and if you didn't live in Oz you wouldn't know about any of it!

In other news, I'm supposed to be meeting up with the son of one of my host family's friends... I have never met him but he is apparently 25, 6'3, medium build and good looking... I'll be the judge of that, haha! Nonetheless, he did end up texting me and I guess we're going for coffee or something at a later date this week. Keep ya updated!

But do you get news from PCola there? Do they cover the Scratch Ankle Festival? I think not.
