Last Day...

Wow, can't believe my last day in Australia has actually come... it doesn't feel like 5 weeks has gone by already! I feel like there's a lot I didn't get to do (go to Watson's Bay, for one) but the weather has been pretty crappy the last six days so I didn't really want to go.

Before I start with my last day, I'll go over the things I liked and the things I didn't like:

Things I Didn't Like About Sydney
1. Public Transportation -- I can't lie, it was from hell. Whether it would just stop at random hours or extend my travel time x20, I hated it.
2. Taxis -- I think this stems from two majorly bad experiences. The first was when the driver dropped me off in a deserted part of town at 2AM because he wouldn't take me to Cabarita. The second was when I was in a deserted part of town and called the taxi company to get me at the Concord Library (the only landmark I had, since I had no idea where I was). The guy on the other line asked the address, and I said I didn't know. His response? "I don't know either, so call back when you have an address." The things I wanted to do to that snarky little bastard. If I had gotten raped/murdered, it would have been on his hands!!! Luckily I managed to walk back into a part of town I recognized and get home safe.
3. Expense -- A guy from New York City said it was expensive... that says something.
4. Reliance on cash -- People, there were ads on TV to get people to start using credit cards!!! What does that say?! The inability to use credit cards without a $50 minimum got old really quickly, especially with the exchange rate being the way it is. And I got a lot of fees from using ATMs to withdraw cash
5. Mobile Broadband Internet -- get my internet usage regulated really sucked.

Things I Liked About Sydney
1. Beaches -- I really liked Manly Beach (I went there almost every chance I had) and there was always something new about it. Definitely my favorite spot of all Sydney
2. Asian food -- I've become obsessed with dim sum. They also had "sushi trains" but I never worked up the courage to go in there because I don't know how they work.
3. People -- for the most part, everyone was pretty friendly. I must admit I noticed it more with the older crowd than people my age, but almost everyone was interested in me and tried to help me out
4. Monuments -- It was exciting to be in a place that had famous landmarks (Bondi Beach, Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge)... not quite used to that with good ol' Pensacola, ha.
5. Fish and Chips -- what can I say, I really liked it. I know I can get it back in the States, but there's just something really good about salty fried fish.

On to my last day, in which I managed to do the following:
1. National Maritime Museum -- Okay, I resisted this for a long time because I thought... boring. It was actually pretty good! I spent a lot of time reading about child migration to Australia and Canada from Britain (allegedly because it would create a better life for the kids, but really because Australia/Canada needed workers). Also read a little about other maritime things such as the Aussie's obsession with swimming, surfing and the such.
2. Sydney Observatory -- It was during the day, so I didn't get to see any actual planets or stuff. I also only just now managed to discover that the Southern Cross is only visible in the southern hemisphere -- too bad I never looked for it (and it's too cloudy tonight to see). At any rate, below is the rather tiny Sydney Observatory, which I also believe is the oldest in Australia.

3. Hyde Park -- really cool little park that has a fountain in the center and St. Mary's Cathedral in the background. I took a picture of a giant bubble.

Okay, okay... I also took a few other pictures.

 4. Went on the Harbour Bridge and took some last photos of the Opera House and Circular Quay. It just seems so weird that I'll be back in the US again by tomorrow -- after that dreadful flight though. Agh, thinking about it is making me shudder!

And now I shall leave you with my last photo of Sydney... until I start adding more later. But at least for this blog post, right?
